Barbados Crafts
Barbados crafts can be found in all shapes and sizes depicting either the history of the island or some part of its culture. Many local materials are sometimes included in the production of these crafts. Some Barbados crafts are made from beautiful sea shells; seeds from trees; or from the island’s mahogany trees; just a name a few of the local items used in production. There are a variety of places where one can shop to view and purchase such craft souvenirs. I had the opportunity to visit one such place on my last visit; Pelican Arts Center located in St. Michael, near the Barbados Port Authority complex.
This Center has an array of arts – metal works, sea shells, basketry, to name a few. In some shops you will be privilege to see the making of some these crafts. Most of these Barbados crafts are made by women and mainly women are the sole owners of these shops. To keep this Center within a cultural atmosphere, each business is located within a building in the shape of a house which is brightly painted.
The Bajan hospitality is also felt within these shops as owners are willing to explain how items are made or tell you where you may be able to locate a particular souvenir of your choice. I found in some stores that some merchants do import some of their crafts but they will tell you that the item or items were not locally made.
