Barbados Island
Some Local Facts

Barbados Travel Checklist

Barbados Island for fun and frolic! let me help you complete preparations for this exciting time by sharing some interesting facts about our island. Ready; let’s go…

Weather : Sunny most days with an occasional rain shower falling mostly during your sleeping hours. Although the temperature measures around 21-31 degrees Celsius or 70-87 degrees Fahrenheit, it is not humid since the tropical trade winds give a constant breeze across the island...

Language: The main language in Barbados is English. We call it the Queen’s English as we were once under the British rule. Outsiders say we speak quickly; if you don’t understand us let us know, we will do our very best to slow it down…

Driving: All driving in Barbados is done on the left hand side of the road. There are many round-a-bouts throughout the island especially on the ABC Highway. Just remember this slogan for round-a-bouts, “Persons approaching from the right is always right”.

Drivers are very respectful of other drivers and obey all laws. The international rules and codes for driving also apply in the island. If you are waiting at an intersection or attempting to make a right-hand turn most times the approaching driver will flash his/her lights giving you the right-away. You should still always approach with caution. Always wave your hand as a means of appreciation or if close enough just say “thank you”.

Telecommunications: Cable and Wireless is the largest provider of phone service in the island. The island’s communication network is mostly built on fiber optic technology and is one of the best available in the Caribbean.

Cell phone service:

If your cell phone has the roaming feature and is set up to make and receive calls while traveling internationally it most likely will work in Barbados. You can buy a “sim card” to replace your current one to make calls while on the island. You also have the option of buying “Pay-as-you-go” phones and phone cards from Cable & Wireless.

Internet:

High speed wireless service is available through-out the island. Wireless service is available in many hotels and a few internet café. Speeds are many times faster than a dial-up.

Clothes: Wondering what to bring with you to Barbados island since all these travel regulations! Well, start with at least two swim suits outfits; plenty shorts and shirts for during the day and a few elegant casual outfits for the evenings. Pack both sandals and shoes as you will need both. And don't forget the sunscreen - spf 30 or above.

Although we like our visitors to have fun; we also ask them to dress appropriate when not on the beach. Some restaurants and night clubs do have dress codes so be aware of your dress at all times.

Local Food: If you are a vegetarian who eats fish, Barbados island have plenty fresh fish to choose from including our special and well known Flying Fish and if you are a chicken or meat lover you are really at home. Must warn you! Dishes might have different flavors and taste.

There are plenty vegetables and fruits, do try some of the local fruits; my choices - golden apples; plums; and cashews (real cashews)

Don't just eat at the hotel or guest house; experience the local cuisine at many local restaurants and shops. Try Cheffette Restaurant. It is a local fast food chain with dinning facilities- wine included - I just love it. Yummy Yummy!

Religion : Barbados island is know for its many different denominations. I am sure you will find one to attend if interested. From Catholic, Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah Witness, and Pilgrim Holiness … the list goes on and on.

Most services are held on Sunday morning; there are some religions that do worship on Saturday. Times for services can be found in the local newspapers.
