Barbados Music – Calypso - One of the Island Unique Products
Barbados Music is one of the island's unique products. Calypso is the genre of music which belongs to Barbados. Calypso has the infectious rhythms and beats of the drums which will make you move your waistline no matter your age. Calypso has African roots and was influenced by Reggae out of Jamaica and Soca out of Trinidad.
The Caribbean as a whole has its own culture with each island in the chain having some unique characteristics. We, Caribbean people claim to be different from each other; but deep within, as you can see from the musical mix above, we are as connected to each other as the Caribbean islands themselves.
Barbados hosts many music festivals annually. The Crop Over festival which celebrates our roots and African heritage through Calypso and masquerade. There is the annual Jazz Festival, Gospel Fest, and the Reggae Festival which all feature local performers in addition to some regional and international acts.
No matter what time of the year you come to visit with us you are likely to experience some form of cultural musical activity.
The annual Crop Over Festival is a five weeks event ending with an all day Mardi Gras style parade of colourful costumes and bands. If you happen to be in the island on the first Monday in August, I encourage you to be a part of the festival. Lots of fun, local food, and music, music, and more music… Learn more about this festival and others:
