Religion History In Barbados

Religion History in Barbados

Religion was an important part of the history of Barbados after emancipation.

If there is one comment that most tourists make when they visit the island it’s “Wow! You have many churches!” It is a true sentiment.

Across the entire country there is no limit on the number of churches within each parish. The first religion to grace the shores of Barbados, Anglican, was brought by the British colonizers.

Within each parish there is a main parish Anglican church. The other denominations of Christianity and other religions on the island include Methodism, Catholicism, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah witness, Pentecostal, Muslim, Judaism and Rastafarianism (usually described more as a movement than a religion).

The mosques are mainly located in the urban areas of the island as is the location of the Jewish synagogue. The others churches are found sprinkled all over the island with the Catholic churches having a great tendency to be located in more coastal locations from the West coast to the South coast.
